Clinically compatible illness with laboratory confirmation by

• isolation of Chlamydophila psittaci by culture (must be performed in level 3 laboratory) from respiratory specimens or blood OR
• PCR from respiratory specimens or blood OR
• fourfold or greater rise in antibody in specimens taken at least 2 weeks apart
