Requirements

If you have any questions about opening a new fish processing plant or complaints about fish products in a store or restaurant that you think made you sick contact your local Health Authority.

Licensing & reporting requirements

Certain activities in the commercial seafood industry require a license or may be subject to reporting requirements. These activities include receiving, processing and selling fish and seafood.

For comprehensive information on getting a seafood industry licence, and licensing and reporting requirements, including help with compliance, see the BC government Seafood Industry Licensing  and Seafood Safety webpages.

The Seafood Industry Licensing webpage covers:

  • the industry activities that require a license
  • the activities that are subject to requirements
  • detailed information about, requirements for and application forms for:
  • a fish receiver licence
  • a seafood processor licence
  • a fisher vendor licence
  • list of current license holders as well as a map of fish processing facility locations in BC

The webpage also links to Seafood Safety, which has complete resources to help compliance with the act and regulations, including:

  • the Fish and Seafood Act and Licensing Regulation
  • seafood industry notices
  • sanitation plan supports
  • food safety plan supports
  • food safety plan educational video series
  • contact information for a qualified food safety specialist

Due to the potential hazards of shellfish toxins, all shellfish in BC must be processed through a Federally registered plant. This is part of the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program.
