About the survey

The Survey on Population Experiences, Action and Knowledge (SPEAK) asks people living in B.C. who are 18 years of age and older about their physical and mental health and social and economic well-being. The survey results provide valuable information about what is important to British Columbians and how to the health and well-being of their communities.

Previous rounds of the SPEAK survey offered valuable insights about your experiences during the pandemic. Public health teams have used the results to inform and prioritize programs and health initiatives in your community.

The first B.C. COVID-19 SPEAK survey was held in May 2020 and the second survey took place April and May of 2021. The most recent survey, the third BC SPEAK Survey, was open from April to July 2023.

Protecting your privacy

Safeguards are in place to ensure your privacy. Data collected in the COVID-19 survey follows strict privacy practices under the B.C. Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The act governs how your information is collected, who sees it and how the information is used. Read the complete privacy statement.

Frequently asked questions

I entered the BC SPEAK Survey Contest. What were the rules and regulation and when will the winner be announced?

This contest is sponsored by each of the participating health authority, in conjunction with a provincial Public Health survey conducted by all health authorities in B.C.

Contest Period

The contest started at 0900 PST on April 25, 2023, and ended no earlier than 23:59 PST on July 31, 2023, or in accordance with the end date of the BC SPEAK Survey.

Eligibility

People who participated in the BC SPEAK Survey and provided their email address the draw and who meet the age eligibility requirements.

How to enter

Complete the BC SPEAK Survey and enter a valid email on the final page to be entered into a giveaway draw (valued at $25.00 CAD to $570.00 CAD).

Participants can only complete the survey and enter the contest once.

Draw and Winner Selection

To ensure winners in all regions, prizes will be awarded in each sub-regions within the health authority.

Participants will be selected by random draw from eligible participants in each sub-region after the survey has closed, no earlier than 23:59 PST on July 31, 2023. Prizes valued at $25.00 CAD to $570.00 CAD will be awarded.

The potential winners will be contacted by email. Prizes will be distributed to the winners by a method agreed upon by the winner approximately two weeks after the close of the survey.

Chances of winning depend on the number of eligible participants.

Privacy

By entering this contest, each participant gives permission to use their personal information (email address) for the purpose of administering this contest, namely for contacting the winner. All personal information will be collected by the British Columbia Center for Disease Control (“BCCDC”), a part of the Provincial Health Authority. This will be done pursuant to sections 26 (c) and (e) of the B.C. Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FIPPA").

I received an email about the SPEAK survey. How did you have my email?

We sent email invitations to people who participated in the first and/or second COVID-19 SPEAK Surveys who indicated they were interested in being contacted to participate in future surveys.

How were the questions in the survey developed?

The BC SPEAK survey questions have been drawn from validated sources where possible such as Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), national and international COVID-19 Population Health Surveys including specific tools from Statistics Canada and the World Health Organization, and the national Census. The survey was developed by public health teams at First Nations Health Authority, all regional health authorities, the BC Centre for Disease Control, B.C.’s Ministry of Health, and in consultation with partners throughout the province.

Is the information that I provide on the UBC Qualtrics survey tool then stored in the U.S.?

No. The UBC Qualtrics survey tool saves all data to Canadian servers. Specifically, the survey. Specifically, the survey information collected using this tool is stored in Toronto, Ontario and backed up in Montreal, Quebec.

Why did you asking about ethnicity and income in a health survey?

We asked about socio-demographic questions (like education, income, and ethnicity) to ensure all segments of our population are properly represented based on available census data, and in recognition that many experiences of health and well-being are highly influenced by our backgrounds and circumstances. This information ensures public health planning is relevant and responsive to the needs of our diverse population.

What happens after I complete the survey?

Now that the survey has closed, public health teams will begin analysing and validating the data. The findings provide valuable insights into the health and well-being of people and communities in British Columbia. The results will be made available on an interactive, dashboard available to the public.

Where can I find the results from previous surveys?

Results from the first and second survey, BC COVID-19 SPEAK: Your story, our future, are available on the B.C. COVID-19 SPEAK Survey Dashboard.

The dashboard is an interactive tool that provides insights into the experiences of British Columbians during the first wave of the pandemic. Results are available at a regional or community level on healthcare, social and economic impacts, behaviour changes, risk factors, resilience and more.
